Victor Perantoni arrived with his young family in the United
States a few months after President Kennedy's murder. The tragic episode saddened Victor who had envisioned
the United States, 'America' as he called it, to be a land safe from the ugly realities that he had experienced after
1939 under fascism and communism. But what happened in Dallas on that fatal noon hour of 22 November 1963 ruptured
his idealistic hopes.

Victor settled his family in a Polish-Italian ethnic community
in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he resumed his philatelic and numismatic passions by joining stamp-clubs and
philatelic social groups. He traded Polish, Italian, and Australian stamps for United States stamps and
coins, thus bringing his collections 'up to date' with his new homeland.

Victor begins collecting
in U.S.A.
The pre-1960's varieties of American collectibles listed below
(and on eBay and Delcampe) were obtained by Victor at stamp meetings and swap fairs in Wisconsin during 1964 &
1965. (Instead, his mint and uncirculated coins and all his mint stamp collections had been obtained
by him directly from the United States Mint and U.S. Post Office.)

Soon after his arrival in the U.S.A. Victor
was interviewed for employment as a letter-carrier for Milwaukee's Post Office. He had learned the
English language during his earlier sojourn in Australia, but it was not very good. So, it was suggested that he
learn about U.S. cities and states and then return to apply for a job in mail-sorting, which would require
being tested in his speed and recognition of U.S. cities and states. In 1964, adult night-classes of the 'Milwaukee School System' did not offer a suitable resource
that Victor might've used for a concentrated study of U.S. cities and states. So then, Victor developed his
own way for learning about U.S. cities and states ... Also, it would be lots more fun! He would learn all about U.S. cities and states at
Milwaukee's stamp-clubs and at philatelic
swap-meetings where he traded European and Australian postal collectibles for — U.S.A. CITY
POSTMARKS. Victor learned 'US cities and states' from President Thomas Jefferson! Hundreds USA

Victor's U.S.A. postmarks and stamps of WWII December 7, 1941
|
|
|
Prior to 7 Dec 1941 the general mood in
U.S.A. was a mood of isolationism. Citizens did not want to be involved in Europe's war which
had been going on for more than two years. Postmarks below mark the last days of American isolationism (1-6 Dec 1941)

The morning of 7 Dec 1941, "the
date that will live in infamy," without any warning Japanese zeros attacked USA at Pearl Harbor. In this
way changing the course of the war and of modern history as we know it today. It was on a Sunday morning and all U.S. Post Offices were closed. Therefore, it is not likely to find any postmarks with that infamous date. The next 6
postmarks are within hours before and after the attack.

In 1979 Victor retired to Florida with Luigina, his Italian
wife since 1943. He joined the local Winter Park Stamp Club where he enthusiastically continued
in his philatelic passion. Victor finally ceased collecting stamps in 2001 when he fell victim to Alzeimer's
terminal disease. Victor
Perantoni passed away in 2002, being survived by his beloved Luigina, their sons Robert and George, and their eight grandchildren. More about Victor, about his WWII experiences, and about his collections can be read in his son's book: "Arrivederci Leopolis - The
Lion's War" by George Perantoni and Sam Ivey, published by Amazon in 2011. CLICK FOR MORE ABOUT VICTOR PERANTONI – about his experiences during WWII – about his family – and see a video
of Victor making a philatelic presentation at the Winter Park Stamp Club in 1992.
